Haddenham Community Infants School

Physical Education at Haddenham Community Infant School

Here at Haddenham Community Infant School we have a comprehensive PE programme which aims to enthuse and inspire our children to develop and extend their physical skills through a wide variety of experiences.

The time allocated to PE is a minimum of 2 hours per week and includes the development of skills in movement, dance, drama, gymnastics and team games.

All children in Year R, Year 1 and Year 2 are taught short tennis with the expert tuition of Caroline Care, from Haddenham Tennis Club, as part of Special Choosing activities. Many of our children then go on to join the Haddenham Tennis Club to continue lessons with Caroline.

All children and staff also get wiggling to daily “Wake and Shake” sessions in the classroom or playground.

Classes have timetabled sessions of physical activity, with their class teacher, working on developing skills in gymnastics, dance, and athletics throughout the school year. In addition to these sessions all year groups receive a 45 minute PE session led by a coach from IGNITE Sports alongside the class teacher on Thursday mornings. The scheme of work planned and followed covers a wide range of sports including tag rugby, football, hockey, boccia, tri golf, tag rugby, netball, rounders, orienteering and athletics. Sports and skills are built on year on year so the children have a wide range of skills when moving onto Haddenham Community Junior School.

Our school offers extra curricular opportunities for all children to become involved in short tennis lessons, football and hockey coaching, tag rugby, street dance, cheerleading, Jazzercise, cross country and skipping workshops.

The children are actively encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities which run during lunchtimes and after school by teaching staff, experts within the local community and IGNITE sports.

Our school works alongside the School Sports Partnership and takes part in sporting events, activities and competitions with other schools including a Tag Rugby Development Day, Hockey Tournaments, Multiskills Events and Tennis Competitions. We are excited and proud to be part of the HASSP sports group and are taking part in events and competitions including cross country and the Dance Festival.

We are fortunate enough to have easy access and the use of the Village Recreation Ground which we have used to run clubs, Football Days, run by Haddenham Football Club and our Sports Days where parents and children can join us to celebrate and share their child’s sporting achievements.

Our school encourages children to become sports ambassadors and gives opportunities for them to teach the skills they have learned in physical activities through “Sparkle Days”. In recent “Sparkle Days” children have used their talents and taught their peers a new skill in a sporting activity for example; rugby, ballet and juggling.
